British | Ghanaian
I know where I come from, my Dad is Ghanaian, and my Mum is British. My parents talk about where we’re from and about how we should be proud of who we are. People often ask me where I’m from and I feel proud to say I’m half Ghanaian. People that don’t know me are curious about what my heritage is, I don’t mind them asking because I’m not ashamed of my background and I like telling people about what makes me, me!
We see lots of our extended family, but we don’t often eat cultural food. My Grandma cooks lots of traditional food but she’s not here that much. My Dad has learnt some traditional recipes and cooks them from time to time. We don’t dress traditionally, and we don’t really listen to African music but I know my Dad did when he was growing up.
I enjoy eating traditional Ghanaian food when I can, and my family tells me about Ghana and what it’s like there. I’d love to go there one day. My British culture is what we do most of the time because it’s where we live, and our family are all close by.
We talk a lot about our different cultures and what it means to be Black. We watch a lot of documentaries about different cultures and races, and as a family we talk about issues which come up in the news. We like to watch comedians who talk about their experiences of growing up with different lives to us.
One of my many role models is Barack Obama because he is not only a strong independent Black man, but he also has risen above all of the racists and people that have said that he can’t be president because he is Black.
I have been treated differently than everyone else when I'm at school. I go to a mainly White school and a small percentage of people are racist, and call me bad names, and if I wear something black or dark they say that I am melting. Comments like that do get to me sometimes but I try my best to ignore it.
When I am older I really want to be a basketball player because there are so many other Black and mixed-race players out there, and I feel that I'll be accepted and not judged. I have also fallen in love with the sport.
