About Mixedracefaces

Identity is not black and white.

Mixedracefaces is a visual storytelling platform and cultural organisation dedicated to documenting portraits and lived experiences of people with mixed heritage. Through photography and personal narratives, we challenge narrow and outdated definitions of what it means to be “mixed-race,” recognising identity as layered, fluid, and deeply personal.
Every story shared on Mixedracefaces is told in the individual’s own voice—honest, open, and shaped by lived experience.

Why We Exist
The mixed-race population is growing worldwide, yet representation often remains limited, oversimplified, or misunderstood. Mixedracefaces exists to disrupt binary thinking and reflect the world as it truly is: complex, interconnected, and diverse.
Our work explores how culture, heritage, and intersectionality influence the ways people navigate identity, belonging, and everyday life.

Our Purpose
We are committed to amplifying the visibility and presence of mixed-heritage people across communities, organisations, and cultural spaces. As advocates for diversity and authentic representation, we aim to foster understanding, connection, and a deeper sense of belonging through storytelling.

Our Roots
Mixedracefaces was founded in honour of Rienkje Zoet, whose life crossed cultures at a time when doing so required immense courage. A Dutch woman who  married a Ghanian man and moved to Ghana in the 1950s, she  and her husband Fred Attoh built a life rooted in openness, resilience, and love during an era when interracial relationships were widely challenged.  Her legacy of boundary-breaking and cultural connection continues to shape the values at the heart of Mixedracefaces.

Community & Care
At its core, Mixedracefaces is about belonging. Through shared stories, people often recognise themselves in others—beyond labels of race, gender, sexuality, religion, or age. In a fast-moving digital world, we create space for reflection, empathy, and meaningful connection.
We also advocate strongly for wellbeing, recognising that sharing stories and being heard can be both empowering and healing.

Trust & Lived Experience
We foster an open, respectful, and judgement-free environment where every story is held with care.
Mixedracefaces is a family-run platform led by lived experience. As curators who are mixed ourselves, we speak from within the community—not from observation—bringing authenticity, empathy, and understanding to every story we share.

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
